Message for the guy who reportedly keeps a bust of the fellow who made the following observation in his oval-shaped office:
"It's better to jaw-jaw than to war-war." -- Winston Churchill

I received an email from Lyle earlier today regarding the coup d'etat in Thailand. She asked that I post this email as she is unable to access this site herself:
i can't access my typepad blog to update it because the telephone organisation of thailand has blocked access to all typepad-related sites. true service, according to a bangkok friend, is still open to typepad but lucky us, we have t.o.t. which is of course government controlled and therefore censored as of now. it's driving me NUTS not to be able to write on my own site about this.
pedro is working in japan right now, and he's sleeping, so he has no idea what's going on. i went to bed at 11pm and was woken up 45min later by my friend sarah's sms saying "school canceled tomorrow, wednesday, due to military coup". it's like a bizarre dream. we had cnn for a short while after that, then it was cut out. local channels are all playing thai muzak and showing montages of roayl family images. the montages occasionally break for a brief speech by a spokeman for the 'democratic provisional authority'. funny they call it democratic -- hunh, to me, something about military coups and democracy don't seem to go together.
the coup guys are apparently dewclaring loyalty to the king, but if they truly loved him as he deserves, they wouldn't put him through this. why couldn't they just wait for the election set for november?!
you asked what the beef is with the pm. well, he's fantastically wealthy and corrupt, but so are many political and military leaders.
what motivated the army to take over now instead of put up with him until the election, i don't know. check out 2bangkok.com and bangkokpundit.com (or is it bangkok-pundit.com?) for better information, more detail on what's led up to tonight.
thanks for checking in on us. you guys, if one of you have time, could you possibly please go to my blog and paste in this email as a comment to my most recent post? this is ridiculous that i can't post at all, much less access or view my own site in any sort of way. at least if this is there as a comment, people who visit my blog will know that i'm ok and am trying desperately to update the site somehow. if you can do that, thank you so much!!
